Hanan’s Story

Producer story

Hanan is a person with endless positive energy and a big heart. It is these two qualities that remarkably lead to him creating his business, AgroCafe! After he received his B. Sc in Biotechnology from Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem and was awarded an MBA from the Hebrew University, he decided to take some time to travel. He set off on an adventure to South America.

During his travels, he met local coffee bean farmers who were struggling and barely able to make a living from their harvest. Hanan’s heart went out to the farmers, and he knew that his Israeli knowledge of farming techniques could benefit them.

Hanan offered to help the farmers and was overjoyed when they accepted his assistance!  He terminated his travels and spent time on the coffee plantations making life-long friendships and teaching the farmers how to increase their harvest and their beans’ quality.

He set up systems for them to improve the soil, watering, and growing conditions.

When the farmers wanted to pay him, he declined, instead requesting that they share a percentage of their increased yield of coffee beans. The farmers were happy to do that, and since that day, Hanan has never asked for financial compensation, just that his farmer-partners share a portion of the harvest over and above the previous years.

The Story AgroCafe

In true Israeli fashion, Hanan found both a friend and a business partner when he met his neighbor, Eran Yitzhak. As Eran learned about AgroCafe he became excited to partner with Hanan to help the business grow.

When they receive their green coffee beans from the farmers, they store and roast them as needed in small batches. Roasting coffee beans brings out the aroma and flavor otherwise locked inside the green bean and combines art and science. Expert roasters have to “read the beans” and roast them to the perfect depth, taking split-second timing! A whole batch of beans can be ruined by mere seconds spent too long in the roaster!

The team has perfected several different roasts that reflect the location and plantation from which they come such as his Colombia and Costa Rica roast. In addition to his single estate beans, they have created artful blends of beans from different plantations.

AgroCafe’s story is continuing to evolve. Hanan and Eran have recently partnered with the Israel Department of Agriculture to explore growing coffee in the Holy Land. They have planted their first coffee plantation in Israel in Judea! While they are excited about growing coffee in Israel, Hanan and Eran are committed to continuing their partnership with the farmers Hanan met while traveling.

By helping farmers and coffee growers deal with weather, water, and soil issues through unique growing methods and advanced Israeli technology, Hanan, Eran, and their team embody the Torah commandment that the Jewish people become a light unto the nations!
